In 1981, Phil Collins was honing his pop talent with his first solo album and the first Genesis album to sell over a million copies in the US. Abacab was not just about producing hit singles like "No Reply At All" and "Man on the Corner," it also displayed some remnants of their earlier art-rock style with tracks like "Who Dunnit," "Dodo," and "Keep It Dark." However, by 1983, with the release of the self-titled follow-up album, Genesis had fully embraced the hit-making machine of the mid- to late-1980s, and their earlier artistic sensibilities had all but disappeared. It was at this point that the band was reduced to just three members. --Bob Michaels
